Ghost Talent: Chapter 1

Sitting up with a gasp, Kurt panted in the darkness of his room, straining his ears past his own heartbeat. Breathing slowing, as reality asserted itself and the frighteningly realistic dream faded, the man pulled at the blankets as they slowly crept away. It was just a dream...

Dimly, he could see the outlines of the furniture in his room, highlighted by the ring of tiny safety lights on the ceiling that cast a soft red glow. Lifting his hands, Kurt shoved them through his sweaty light brown hair and fell back into bed with a thump. Softly, Marie murmured and rolled over, pulling the remaining blankets off him. If he could have slept on the couch, he would have, but a bed of rocks would have been more comfortable and he had been unable to get the ship to give him extra blankets and a pillow to sleep on the floor with.

Shifting his hands, Kurt scrubbed his face and rolled over to place his feet on the floor. He stood and padded into the bathroom, slapping the button beside the door to shut it as the light switched on upon seeing his movement in the room. Shoving away from the table and straightening, the young man pressed his lips together, looking over his officers, "By my father's will, I am the admiral of this fleet," he told them coldly, "and I will not step down. But right now I'm tired and time-lagged from the Jump in. I'm going to bed." He was too numb in the head to make sense of this. He would think about it tomorrow.

Maybe this was all just a nightmare, and he would wake up and his father would call and demand to know why he had gotten a B on his language exam.

Vathion used to be a normal Gilon boy, but the day his father was assassinated, he lost everything. To save his people from the tyrannical rule of a madman he must find a way to end Gilonnia's Civil War before word of his father's death spreads. Vathion's strength of will is put to the test as he struggles to maintain the loyalty of his crew and hide the truth.

Playing the Hero is the first book in an epic story of one Gilon's loss of innocence mirroring the fall of his species.

His first day at his new job had gone well. Or well enough. He hadn’t had any major incidents – such as dropping people’s orders or forgetting anything important. He’d managed to keep everyone’s drinks filled and spoke to the customers in their own language. Then again, he hadn’t had more than a Carken, two Wolfadon and six Gilon sit down at the tables he had been assigned. The diner wasn’t that large, consisting of perhaps thirty tables. Besides Vathion, there was Cale, and six others who worked as servers in the restaurant. Cale was a slightly pudgy young man who was working at the café to save money in order to get off world. He really wanted to go to Heartland for college. He had hopes of becoming a restaurant owner someday, or a chef. He loved food, and it was obvious.

While Vathion’s first day had been fairly easy, Vathion could tell by the look on Cale’s face that today was going to be a trial. Turning, he looked towards the door and immediately spotted the group of six crawling across the ceiling. They were roughly gilonoid with tails whipping along behind them. Wilsaer...
