Chapter 7 Edit, Undo "I'm sure you know how it is, Stationmaster," Vathion said with a pinned on smile, "changes in leadership always bring out the worst in people. Its basic psychology, really, they feel unsure of the person in charge, they act out." He shrugged. "They're not bad people. They just had problems handling the change in command and as a result were let go without marks against their records." The Baelton Stationmaster was nodding. "However, since they were my crew, I'll pay for all the damages and for last rites." "That is understandable, and an agreeable solution," the man said. "I will have someone send you a bill as soon as possible." Vathion nodded. "If that's all, I have other matters that require my attention." "Yes," the Stationmaster said blandly. "I'm sure you do." He disconnected first. Clenching his fists, Vathion screamed at the blank screen, "Damn you Gatas!" Thumping his elbows on the desk, he buried his face in his hands. "Failing! Already! The Fleet's going to fall apart and it's all my fault!" If only Jathas were here... Jathas could always see the brighter side of things. |

Chapter 6 Filling Shoes Stepping onto the bridge again, Vathion's gaze flicked across his first-shift crew. Li'Codas looked at him briefly, then paled, quickly looking away. Ma’Gatas, who stood with his arms folded near Vathion's seat said, “I still object to this, Cinnamon wasn’t finished with repairs.” Vathion said, “The damage does not endanger the crew. Besides, fixing hull armoring doesn’t fix the underlying problems in the Cinnamon’s hull structure.” Of course, that was a topic he could write a twenty-page dissertation on: Why the Natan Fleet needed to have ships retired and new ones put in their place. In fact, Vathion had written such a document, but it was on the hard drive he had brought with him and probably not of much interest to anyone. ‘Jathas helped me write that too...’ He quickly pushed that thought aside. Vathion missed Jathas as much as he missed his mother, and the time when his biggest worry was getting his hacking project done for Hell-Razor without his high school computer programming teacher knowing what he was doing. The really terrible part of it all was that he kept thinking of things to tell Jathas or Mirith. #Sorry,# Paymeh said, #Couldn’t wait.# |

Chapter 5 (Covering Tracks) Natan Gannatet’s Wonderful Autobiography! I’d like to start out by saying that this goes out to my beloved and my son. I’d like to thank them for putting up with my infrequent calls and never visiting them. So! I suppose I should start at the beginning; I was born on May twenty-second, sixty-oh-six to Midris Gannatet and Ameda Gannatet. I was the second son, my brother Saimon was seven years older. I was born on Victory Station out in the Teviot sector, on the edge of Gilonnian space - actually near the corner of Wolfadon space too, and beyond that was the wide Unknown! Victory Station had been built by my grandfather. Ameda, my mother, was the current Stationmaster. When I was seven, the Emperor’s brother, Gelran, took off with Ha’Likka, the then second in command to the top admiral of the Imperial Navy. Along with her went half the navy and the war broke out. Victory was evacuated and mothballed, due to our exposed position near Rebel space - Emperor Armalan couldn’t spare the ships needed to protect us. |
